Wir sind ein kooperativ agierendes Team aus ca. 15 Architekt*innen, das 2005 von Nanni Grau und Frank Schönert gegründet wurde. Uns vereint die Leidenschaft und Expertise für Umbau und Umnutzung. In unserer Arbeit setzen wir uns kritisch mit neuen Handlungsfeldern sowie experimentellen Strategien einer nachhaltigen Raumproduktion in bestehenden Strukturen, Gebäuden und Quartieren auseinander.
Prozessoffene robuste Architekturen
Das Arbeiten mit dem Bestand sowie mit ökologischen Baustoffen betreiben wir als programmatische und forschende und Praxis – mit dem Ziel eines geringen Ressourceneinsatzes und prozessoffener, robuster Architekturen. Alle bestehenden Ressourcen – baulich, sozial, klimatisch – dienen dabei als Ausgangspunkt.
Minimaler Ressourceneinsatz
Im Fokus steht eine Architekturpraxis der gezielten, minimalen Eingriffe, mit denen bestehenden Gebäuden neue Nutzungszusammenhänge ermöglicht werden. Gebäude begreifen wir dabei grundsätzlich in ihrer Veränderbarkeit, als vernetzte Lebensräume und Teile von Kreisläufen.
Transformation gelingt nur gemeinsam
Unser Büro plant häufig in kooperativen Organisationsformen und entwickelt gemeinsam mit Nutzer*innen, Bauherr*innen und vielen Expert*innen langfristige Lösungen, Strukturen und Projekte. Wir unterstützen zukünftige Nutzer*innen in partizipativer Teilhabe, Selbstbau und Careprozessen.
Im Mittelpunkt stehen Lösungen für außergewöhnliche Orte und Bauaufgaben. Schlüsselprojekte von Hütten & Paläste sind u.a. der zirkuläre und partizipative Umbau der U-Halle Mannheim (2023), die Transformation eines Plattenbauquartiers im Rahmen der IBA Thüringen (2023), die Scheune Prädikow, eine Basisinfrastruktur für die Neubesiedelung und Transformation des genossenschaftlich organisierten Hof Prädikow (2021) und das Selbstbauprojekt Holzmarkt-Dorf in Berlin (seit 2015). Durch den Umgang mit konventionellen Strukturen entstehen unkonventionelle Projekte, die Einfachheit und Robustheit in Konzept, Gestaltung und Funktionalität verbinden.
Unsere Arbeit wurde vielfach publiziert und ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Brandenburgischen Baukulturpreis 2021, dem Staatspreis Umbaukultur 2024, dem Deutschen Nachhaltigkeitspreis Architektur 2024 sowie dem Deutschen Städtebaupreis 2025.
Unser Leistungsspektrum erstreckt sich von der Objektplanung in den Leistungsphasen 1-8 nach HOAI, über die Erstellung von Gutachten und Machbarkeitsstudien zu Zustand und Nutzbarmachung von Bestandsgebäuden, bis zu Moderation und Durchführung von Beteiligungsprozessen.
Wir sind in ein Netzwerk aus Partner*innen mit Expertise in Transformationsprozessen verschiedener Fachdisziplinen (TGA, Statik, Bauphysik, Schadstoffgutachten, etc.) und Hochschulen (TU-Berlin, Hochschule München) eingebunden.

Hütten & Paläste is a collaborative architecture practice comprised of around 15 architects, founded in 2005 by Nanni Grau and Frank Schönert. We share a passion and expertise for the transformation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings. Our work critically engages with emerging fields of practice and experimental strategies for sustainable spatial production within existing structures, buildings, and neighbourhoods.
Process-oriented, Robust Architecture
Working with existing buildings and natural building materials is both a guiding principle and an ongoing research-based practice. Our aim is to create architecture that is resource-efficient, process-oriented, and resilient. Existing resources – physical, social, and climatic – form the starting point of every project.
Minimal Resource Use
Our work focuses on precise, minimal interventions that enable new forms of use within existing buildings. We understand buildings as inherently adaptable and interconnected living environments that are integral parts of material and social cycles.
Transformation is a Collaborative Process
Our projects are often developed through cooperative organisational models in close collaboration with clients, users, and interdisciplinary experts. We support future users through participatory planning processes, self-build initiatives, and care-based approaches to foster long-term structures and resilient communities.
At the core of our work are solutions for unique sites and complex construction challenges. Key projects by Hütten & Paläste include the circular and participatory transformation of the U-Halle Mannheim (2023); the regeneration of a prefabricated housing estate as part of IBA Thüringen (2023); the Scheune Prädikow (Prädikow Barn), which provides shared infrastructure to support the revitalisation and transformation of the Hof Prädikow cooperative (2021); and the Holzmarkt Village self-build project in Berlin (ongoing since 2015). By working with conventional structures, we create unconventional projects that combine simplicity, resilience, and functionality in both concept and design.
Our work has been widely published and has received numerous awards, including the Brandenburg Architecture Culture Award (2021), the State Prize for Adaptive Reuse (2024), the German Sustainability Award for Architecture (2024), and the German Urban Design Award (2025).
We offer a range of services, including architectural design and project delivery across HOAI phases 1–8, as well as feasibility studies, building assessments, and strategies for the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. We also facilitate and moderate participatory planning and stakeholder engagement processes.
We are part of an extensive network of partners with expertise in transformation processes across multiple disciplines, including building services engineering, structural engineering, building physics and hazardous materials assessment, as well as academic institutions such as TU Berlin and Munich University of Applied Sciences.
