Holzmarkt Dorf, Berlin, 2012 - 2013

The central planning concept for the village is the development of an architecturally practical, spatial structure that will serve its users as a framework for new spaces of possibility. It is flexible and can be developed over the long term. By means of annexation, conversion and extension, it enables a constant process of transformation and so guarantees the preservation of creative freedom.
The concept “Hallen und Hütten“ (Halls and Huts) is a three-dimensional guide on self-help construction. The infrastructural backbone of the settlement comprises four halls made from simple, quickly assembled precast concrete elements available through a component catalogue.
These large, low-cost spaces accommodate large-scale uses, including a carpentry workshop, music studios, a market and event hall, as well as a practise space for aerial artists. Over the course of time, the halls will be complemented by small huts erected by users in self-build. These will be suited for small-scale uses, such as artist studios, workshops, shops, cafés, handicrafts, offices, etc.
Objectives: Cost-effective building to ensure affordable rent for users from the startup and creative scenes; implementation in stages to integrate possibilities for the further development of enclosed and open spaces along the Spree River. The self-build project enables individual and sustainable construction methods.
